When you are too far down to do that: hide in a nook and hope it leaves before you run out of oxygen. Reapers wont chase you when you are near the surface. Sidenote, there was a reaper on the side of the Aurora that would terrorize anyone nearby. Eventually the fear wears off and you get used to their screams. Way back when it involved an invincible cyclops, but now just go invisible, find one and just follow it around for awhile.
The way I got used to them is to just spend time near them. The Reaper Leviathan used to be able to fly in the air due to a glitch. Its face and head area appears to have multiple scars, suggesting they often fight each other or other leviathans. That never has a reaper? That explains why I could never find the reaper that was supposedly in front of the aurora. The Reaper Leviathan appears on the cover art for the Subnautica OST, along with the Seamoth. I just cannot get close to Aurora, since I am terribly scared. I haven't finished the game yet but I have a phobia. So, I am playing Subnautica since January now.
